What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a type of dentistry that treats oral misalignments. Specifically, it uses custom appliances to place mild pressure on your teeth and jaw. Over time, that pressure moves them into the optimal position, enhancing your smile and oral health.

Many people think orthodontics is only for children and teens, but that’s not the case. Thanks to modern technologies and advances in care, more and more adults are undergoing treatment as well.

What types of issues can orthodontics correct?

Franklin Square Dental uses orthodontics to correct various alignment issues, including:

  • Spaces between teeth
  • Malpositioned or misaligned jaws
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Crowding

You might also be a candidate for orthodontics if you have a bite abnormality, like crossbite, an underbite, or an overbite.

What are the types of orthodontics?

Franklin Square Dental offers several types of orthodontics, including:

Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear, plastic aligners to straighten your teeth. This type of orthodontics is much quicker than traditional braces and more discreet.

Conventional braces

Conventional braces are orthodontic appliances bonded to the front of your permanent teeth. They feature brackets, metal archwires, and rubber bands. During the course of treatment, you regularly visit Franklin Square Dental, and your provider tightens the wires as necessary.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are almost identical to conventional braces. The only difference is that they’re bonded to the back of your permanent teeth instead of the front. As a result, they’re much more discreet.

Clear (ceramic) braces

Clear braces have brackets made of ceramic. Ceramic looks very similar to your natural tooth enamel, so the braces blend in with your teeth.

What type of orthodontics might benefit me?

Only a qualified dentist can determine the type of orthodontics that will most benefit you. Following an oral exam, a review of your oral health history, and a series of digital X-rays, your Franklin Square Dental provider can make recommendations that align with your budget and needs.

How long does treatment with orthodontics take?

The length of time treatment with orthodontics takes depends on the alignment issues treated and your commitment to the care plan. Most people achieve their desired results within 12-18* months, but it can take longer. Be patient and closely adhere to your provider’s treatment plan.

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment system that straightens your teeth and jaw with a series of see-through oral aligners. Each aligner is made of SmartTrack®, a thermoplastic that doesn’t contain latex, gluten, or BPS. As a result, treatment is safe for pregnant people as well as those with allergies.
What’s more, Invisalign aligners are removable, so you can still eat your favorite foods, including dried fruit, nuts, and even popcorn.

What alignment issues can Invisalign correct?

Franklin Square Dental uses Invisalign to correct various alignment issues, including:
Crooked teeth
Overlapping teeth
Teeth with spaces between them
A malpositioned jaw
You might also benefit from treatment with Invisalign if you have an abnormal bite, like crossbite, an overbite, or an underbite.

What does Invisalign treatment involve?

At Franklin Square Dental, Invisalign treatment begins with a review of your dental health history, an oral exam, and a series of digital X-rays. If your provider determines that your teeth or jaw are misaligned, they take digital impressions of your mouth with an intraoral scanner.
Your provider uploads the scans to a computer-aided design (CAD) program and develops a custom orthodontic treatment plan. The plan maps out the movements of your teeth and jaw, ensuring you achieve your desired results.
After your Franklin Square Dental provider finishes developing a treatment plan, they send your scans to an Invisalign laboratory. A technician at the lab uses the scans to design and manufacture your first pair of custom aligners.
About a week later, you return to Franklin Square Dental and try your aligners on. Your provider makes adjustments as necessary and explains how to care for them. To ensure treatment goes smoothly, make sure to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day, only removing them to eat or brush and floss.
How long does treatment with Invisalign take?
The length of time that treatment with Invisalign takes depends on various factors, including the severity of your alignment issues and your commitment to your provider’s treatment plan. Most people complete treatment in about 12 months* but it can take longer. Be patient, attend each of your appointments, and follow your provider’s instructions closely.
