What is wisdom teeth removal?

Wisdom teeth removal uses special tools to extract one (or several) wisdom teeth –– the third molars at the very back of your mouth. Your wisdom teeth don’t break through your gum line until your late teens or early twenties. As a result, they’re more likely to become impacted, or blocked by your other existing teeth.

If one or more wisdom teeth become impacted, it increases the risk of infection and other oral health problems. Extracting your wisdom teeth can make more room at the back of your mouth and encourage optimal oral hygiene.

Who can benefit from wisdom teeth removal?

You might benefit from wisdom teeth removal if you experience symptoms like:

  • Jaw pain or swelling
  • Swollen, red, or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth

An impacted wisdom tooth can also make it difficult to open your mouth or to bite and chew.

What does wisdom teeth removal involve?

Franklin Square Dental performs wisdom teeth removal on an outpatient basis.

Before the procedure, your dentist conducts an oral exam and takes digital X-rays. They use X-rays to assess the position and exact location of your wisdom teeth. After developing a surgical treatment plan, your provider administers a local anesthetic to numb your mouth.

Then, they use special tools, including an elevator and dental forceps, to loosen your wisdom teeth and carefully remove them. After removing the wisdom teeth, your provider packs the empty sockets with gauze, writes you a prescription for pain medication and antibiotics, and provides care instructions.

Wisdom teeth removal usually takes 30-60 minutes, but if your teeth are severely impacted, it may take longer.

What is recovery like following wisdom teeth removal?

Following wisdom teeth removal, you’ll need to take at least two days off from work or school and other normal activities. In the first 48 hours, many people experience swelling and increased sensitivity, especially at the back of their mouth. Take any medication as prescribed and attend each of your follow-up appointments at Franklin Square Dental.

Eat only soft foods like scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, or apple sauce, and brush and floss more gently than usual. Your mouth should feel back to normal within a few weeks, but if your symptoms don’t improve, contact Franklin Square Dental right away.
